Friends in Chicago: Thank you for such a delightful evening, and for the presentations and conversations of this past weekend! Selected videos appear below.

First, my "Rant on Science at the University of Chicago." Although this speech has been heavily edited, and certain segments added entirely, the bulk of the text comes from a commencement address by Robert Krulwich (one of the hosts of Chicago-based Radiolab, a radio program devoted to talking about science in intelligible and captivating ways) at the California Institute of Technology in 2008. The original address, which is wonderful and beautifully delivered, can be downloaded here. I borrow Krulwich's thoughts not to plagiarize, but rather to spread the word. It is my hope that this will not only inspire the presentation of more science at the Hyde Park Salons, but will continue to frame and reframe, focus and refocus the ongoing discussion at the University of Chicago about the relationship between art and science.

Also at the salon:

David Lakein (a performance artist, and in some ways, group therapist...)

Finally, David Bashwiner, Assistant Professor of Music at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque (otherwise known as one of my best friends :) performed along with Christy Cook. You can visit their blog at Cactus Tractor. A few select videos below.

In case the frame of the videos above appears slightly off-center, you can find the same videos by going directly to YouTube: no 1, no. 2, and no. 3.

I'll see you at the next salon, Sunday, September 23. (Yes, a Sunday.)
