BIG NEWS OF THE DAY

Boulez, Maderna, Stockhausen, the forearm of some unidentifiable guy.
These three guys premiered Stockhausen's "Gruppen" for three orchestras in 1958 (I think it was '58...and I think this picture is from those rehearsals)...and as it turns out, I'm going to have the chance to study/conduct this piece in the Lucerne Festival Academy Masterclass in Conducting with Peter Eotvos (not pictured) and Pierre Boulez (not quite so young and...spritely...? as he looks in this picture).

So it's final?
Yup. It's final. There are 12 students in the masterclass; 6 are designated "primary conductors," 6 are designated "assistant conductors." I'll be one of the assistants with orchestra 3 (which, by the way, is the one Boulez conducted at the premier).
